You usually hear in NFL preseason wagering that it really doesn’t matter who wins or loses but is that really correct? Squads that win during the preseason are actually more likely to carry that result into the regular season. NFL preseason prospects do not vary much as the majority of the time the home team is liked by about a field goal.
NFL preseason wagering contains more than a month of competitions. The Dallas Cowboys and Cincinnati Bengals will play five preseason competitions since they met in the Hall of Fame Game. Does it truly matter to teams like Dallas or Cincinnati if they win in the preseason? The answer that you get from most people is that preseason results do not mean anything but it is not correct.
If you think that the results do matter, then the Dallas Cowboys in particular might be a good bet this year. The team won the Hall of Fame Game as underdogs, and then triumphed in their Week 1 preseason game vs Oakland. Their next game will be Saturday vs the San Diego Chargers. The Cowboys are especially motivated this year by a desire to be the first team in NFL wagering history to sponsor the Super Bowl in their own stadium. This year the Super Bowl is going to be held at Cowboys Stadium, and you can see in the Cowboys’ performance to date how eager they are to be the team playing there this year. And this drive isn’t going to quit with the preseason.
To illustrate how significant preseason records are, let’s look at the Pittsburgh Steelers. In the past eleven years the preseason record of the Pittsburgh Steelers has indicated how they will do in the regular season. A year ago the Pittsburgh Steelers went 3-1 in the preseason and ended 9-7. They actually ought to have been better than that a year ago but they inexplicably lost competitions vs teams like Oakland, Cleveland and Kansas City. Two years ago the Pittsburgh Steelers were 3-1 in the preseason after which they went 12-4 in the regular season and ended up winning the Super Bowl. Three years ago the Pittsburgh Steelers went on to finish 10-6 in the regular season after they went 4-1 in the preseason. Four years ago they went 0-4 and then bumbled to an 8-8 track record and missed the playoffs. The Steelers went 3-1 in 2005 and then went 11-5 during the regular season and won the Super Bowl. For the Pittsburgh Steelers, the preseason has unquestionably mattered.
While you look back at NFL preseason prospects you will see that success and failure does carry over to the regular season. Three years ago there have been only 2 teams that went 0-4 in the preseason. The Rams and Chiefs both went losing and then followed the preseason up by being 3-13 and 4-12 respectively. That year, Green Bay, Tampa Bay, Seattle, New England, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis and San Diego all went 3-1 or greater in the preseason after which they went on to win their divisions.
Success or failure can carry over into the regular season and yes, the preseason does matter.
